Authorities are working to accommodate hundreds of students, who were forced to flee when fire broke out at a residential college at James Cook University early this morning.

James Cook University's Vice Chancellor said the university would be able to accommodate the majority of the students, with 90 set to stay with family and friends nearby.Ms Yumoto said she didn't have a place to stay yet.

"I don't know when I can go and get my stuff, I don't have anything with me but my phone right now," she said. "On Monday I have an assessment due, which I can't submit because of the fire, and I can't get my laptop."
