At Thursday night’s school board meeting, some community members say they are nervous that the West Shore School District will follow others in the area, like Central York and Red Lion in using the Independence Law Center.“We’ve seen it before– books will start getting removed from libraries, education will change, curriculum will be removed, and reviewed, teachings or even mere mentions of students like me or any other minority student will be banned,” said a student.
Several staff and students from the Panther Anti Racist Union at Central York School District wore black to “mourn that the West Shore Board Majority isn't putting students' needs first.” The Independence Law Center is known for aiding school districts in developing policies regarding the bathrooms that students use, the pronouns they use, the sports teams they participate in, and more.Danielle Gross, a parent in the district, said, “So, if your faith is driving you in your governance in a public school, you will cost taxpayers a significant amount of money and if that is your goal then perhaps this service is not the best place for you.
CBS 21 tried to speak with both the president and vice-president of the school board, but they did not want to comment at this time.
