A little more than three weeks after a deadly school bus crash left a preschooler dead and dozens injured, the Hays Consolidated Independent School District on

A Hays CISD bus carrying 44 pre-K students and 11 adults from Tom Green Elementary School crashed with a concrete truck on State Highway 21 in Bastrop County, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries. left a preschooler dead and dozens injured, the Hays Consolidated Independent School District on Monday will unveil its plan for a major safety equipment upgrade. The goal is to have seat belts on every school bus in its fleet.

The 5-year-old and his schoolmates were returning from a field trip to Bastrop County on a 2013 model year school bus when their bus was hit and rolled over. To be clear-- the bus was not required to have seat belts. When the state mandated seat belts in school buses in 2017 it allowed districts to continue using the buses they already had on hand.

The next part of the plan will update its current 2016 and 2017 model buses with seat belts which will cost $468,000.
