Alabama High School Athletic Association Executive Director Alvin Briggs is retiring.

Briggs was instrumental in starting girls’ flag football and securing the current site for the state softball and baseball championships.

Briggs’ retirement will be effective Sept. 2. He informed the AHSAA Central Board of Control of his plan Wednesday at the board’s April meeting in Montgomery. He is the first minority to serve in the role of executive director in the association’s history and was also the first person selected for the position who was already working on the executive staff.
