NTSB opens investigation into deadly Hays CISD school bus crash

A Hays CISD bus carrying 44 pre-K students and 11 adults from Tom Green Elementary School crashed with a concrete truck on State Highway 21 in Bastrop County, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an incident investigation into last month's deadly crash involving a Hays CISD school bus.

The NTSB sent a statement to CBS Austin stating it would not be sending a team or issuing any reports, findings, or conclusions, but rather gathering information that can be used in other school bus crash investigations they're currently conducting.NTSB said this is different from a full investigation and anyone seeking information on the investigation should contact the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In an order issued Friday, federal transportation authorities say Jerry Hernandez. the driver of the concrete pump truck that caused the crash, was prohibited from driving commercial vehicles after failing multiple drug tests. Five-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya and 33-year-old Ryan Wallace were killed in the crash on Friday, March 22 after Hernandez crossed the center line into oncoming traffic on State Highway 21 near the Bastrop-Caldwell county line. Numerous children and adults on the school bus suffered significant injuries.
