U.S. regulators have informed nuclear power company TerraPower that its planned construction permit application for a high-tech reactor needs more work, potentially delaying the development of the plant in Wyoming. TerraPower is aiming to build the $4 billion Natrium reactor on the site of an old coal plant, with the permit application expected this month.
Advanced nuclear reactors like Natrium, which use new materials and fuel types, are supported by the Biden administration as a way to combat climate change. The U.S. Department of Energy has authorized up to $2 billion in taxpayer money for the Natrium project. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has sent TerraPower a readiness assessment of safety and environmental issues, highlighting the need for further review of technical and licensing reports
