Lawmakers look to other education options day after governor's veto survivesJUNEAU, Alaska - School districts across the state are dealing with uncertainty as state lawmakers were unable to override the governor’s veto of a $246 million education package.nothing more than a spending bill, House Majority members said they are now looking at legislation that has policies attached to them to improve educational outcomes.on Tuesday.

Like SB 140, the proposal does have elements relating to charter schools, specifically a charter school coordinator and a charter school termination appeal process. McKay acknowledged this provision needs to be worked on and does not meet the governor’s standards. Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, said these are also elements lawmakers could not find a compromise on before the override vote.

“Alaska’s rural schools remain in limbo, at risk of losing out on critical broadband upgrades that would help lessen the disparities with urban schools of the state by missing a critical deadline,” Schrage said. “House Bill 193 addresses this urgent issue and should be advanced to the floor immediately.”
