Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Thursday signed legislation creating a program similar to school vouchers.

Published: Mar. 7, 2024 at 2:48 PM CST

The Alabama Senate voted 23-9 on Wednesday for the proposal. The Senate approved it after more than five hours of debate in which opposed lawmakers presented divergent views on allowing families to tap into public money for private schooling. “While our state has a strong public education system, all Alabama families will soon have the right to choose their children’s schools,” Ivey said Wednesday night.

While the program would initially be aimed at low and middle-income families, opposed lawmakers questioned how much they would benefit, noting that private school tuition is often more than the $7,000 the state would provide.
