Tamara Lanier's lawsuit says the school is"perpetuating the systematic subversion of black property rights".Harvard spokesman Jonathan Swain told the Associated Press the university"has not yet been served, and with that is in no position to comment on this complaint". Ms Lanier, a retired probation officer who claims to be the great-great-great-granddaughter of Renty, asks in her lawsuit for Harvard to return the images to her family, pay unspecified damages to her and acknowledge that it was"complicit in perpetuating and justifying the institution of slavery".

"I think this case is important because it will test the moral climate of this country and force this country to reckon with its long history of racism."According to her complaint:"By denying Ms Lanier's superior claim to the daguerreotypes, Harvard is perpetuating the systematic subversion of black property rights that began during slavery and continued for a century thereafter.

The suit also alleges Harvard requests a large licensing fee to use the image and points to a book the university sells, From Site to Sight: Anthropology, Photography, and the Power of Imagery, for $40 .

If it was her neighbour who had the photo she wouldn’t care. But because it’s Harvard she’ll sue them 🤑

Interesting. So much was built on the backs of en-slaved Africans. Many elite schools were established or run but the Planter class back in the day, so of course they all owned slaves or profited from the slave trade in some way. Compensation for forced free labour is overdue.

A misspelling of the oof

I want money to we all come from the same ancestors so where does it stop

EVERY BLACK PERSON IN AMERICA SHOULD SUE THEM FOR SPREADING HATERED!!!

Too lazy to work

Another person trying to profit from an educational institution? Is there any proof in her claim those were her relatives. Or is she claiming purely they are of a similar skin tone to her? Seems too many are attempting to sue someone over historical 'links' these days. 🤬

Where there's a buck to be made......

Idk if this is true or not. What's far worse is that most are only concerned with grammar instead of the article's message. If this is true, Harvard needs to pay for the photos. That's the least they could do.

Profit? I don't get it. How do u make profit from something this creepy

Might have been my great great great grandad took the photo, can I make a claim?

I sued some Romans last year and I am campaigning to destroy all Roman remains in the world.

Did someone say: 'Free money?'

remember when you had to read the onion for this level of crazy?

I'm not sure Tamara Lanier would be a retired probation officer living in the US if it wasn't for the appalling exploitation of her ancestors. This many generations down the line, the winners and losers from slavery are not easy to determine.

'Off of ' Who wrote this ?

'off of'? I never thought I'd see the day. Shameful.

I like the way they've shaped the photo into the continent of off Africa.

Plus sa change in USA

Work experience kids are in the room again😩

mwanawasaM Todays World Everyone is Profiting of Everyone

So does that mean nextflix will be sued by relatives of the holocaust on there Nazi programs or how about the history channel by a family from a scene of a deceased ww2 trooper. 🤣🤣

Was English Language taught at your school ?

“Profiting off of”.....Since when did “from” become replaced by “off of”? Lazy, semi-literate, depressing....

Was this written by someone off of the telly?

Cut...cut...right everybody to their trailers the shows over! Nobody photograph or film anything. Just sit and wait to die anything else is profiting from something slavery.

The question to be asked is, are they sold so other universities can teach their pupils about the horrors of slavery? And what better way to bring the point home than having faces to remember that where made to live through it.

Slavery has existed in the world for thousands of years. Whites enslaved other whites in Europe for centuries before the first black was brought to the Western hemisphere. Asians enslaved Europeans. Asians enslaved other Asians. Africans enslaved other Africans.

Vote 👇 are they entitled to sue?

The world has gone stark bloody crazy!
