'Farmers' markets went from being a real niche experience to becoming absolute pillars of their communities': Ph.D. student

When Susan Parker was a kid, her family often visited farmers' markets in the Pictou, N.S. area where she grew up.

"My sister Amelia was a fiddle student of hers, and she would invite her to busk at the market, which brought my whole family to the market often.”Parker says her favourite market by far is the New Glasgow Farmers' Market, which is located along the riverfront, centrally, within downtown New Glasgow.

For her Ph.D. dissertation at UNB, which concerns small- and medium-sized Maritime businesses, Susan Parker from Pictou is researching farmers' markets. — ContributedThe biggest bonus of farmers' markets, Parker feels, is getting to meet the people who are making the products and growing the produce.

“I've found the Maritimes are very unique in the sense of how we treat farmers' markets and buying local," she says. Purdy recommends keeping an eye out “for anything handmade, not only for yourself but also for gifts. I love doing my Christmas shopping at farmers markets or craft fairs.” “I have people who are regulars who don’t just come for the product, but they come to see how we’re doing and are more like a friend," she says.

“I feel people are out of touch with where their food comes from and, as farmers, we are sometimes painted as old-fashioned and uneducated," she says.
