New York high school bus crash: Superintendent says all students injured expected to recover

“I know that they appreciate all the well wishes you are sending, and we can’t wait to welcome them back when they are ready to return," Paul Defendini said this weekend.On Thursday, a bus on its way to band camp in Pennsylvania, carrying 44 people, including four adults and 40 students, veered off a road on a section of Interstate 84 near the town of Wawayanda in Orange County, about two hours northwest of New York City.

While it's unclear how many people are still hospitalized, a dozen people remained hospitalized on Friday, according to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Five people were hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said.On Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul said tire failure may have been to blame, with investigators saying it’s too early to make any assumptions.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into what caused the crash, and federal investigators will likely look into the history of safety inspections for Regency Transportation.
