The First Minister spoke out before Unison members walk out across 24 council areas for three days of strike action.

Humza Yousaf has made a last ditch appeal to Unison to call off strike action which will close schools across Scotland.

Unison is the only union continuing with this week's strike action after the GMB and Unite both agreed to consult their members over a final pay offer.Speaking on a campaign visit to Cambuslang ahead of next week's Rutherglen by-election, the SNP leader urged Unison to consult with its members. "I don't think anyone could accuse the Scottish Government of not being involved alongside Cosla, but it is for Cosla to lead these negotiations.

He told the BBC: "It is the pay offer in itself but also there's been decades of under funding in local government and we've got some sympathy for local authorities on that basis.
