Higher Education Minister Simon Harris said that he was 'absolutely astonished' by parties who say they would not cut tax as part of the budget just hours after Holly Carins' comments at the Social Democrats' think-in.

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris appears to have taken aim at Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns for saying that she would not cut taxes as part of Budget 2024.At her own party’s think-in in Dublin on Thursday, Ms Cairns said that the Government was attempting to “buy votes” by cutting the USC.

He said that he “factually told the truth” and that the Financial Times had published an article stating that Irish banks had been the “slowest and the most reluctant to share the benefits of interest rate increases with others”. Ms Cairns also said on Thursday that the Government did not fully understand people’s plight with the cost of living as TDs, Ministers and the Taoiseach were on very high salaries.
