in state school aid cuts to the district, which serves about 3,000 students in six high schools.
The Monmouth County district was slated to receive $23.8 million in state aid for 2023-24, a 22% decrease, and in April, citing the cut, the school board eliminated the bus routes. State law requires schools to provide free buses for high school students who live 2.5 miles or more away from school. Courtesy busing is for students who live closer than that limit, and about a third of the district’s students used it. The almost 200-square-mile district covers eight towns: Colts Neck, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Howell, Manalapan, and Marlboro.
