The Victorian government is being urged to reconsider a decision to dramatically cut the number of specialist teachers who visit schools to help students with disabilities navigate mainstream education.

abc.net.au/news/families-fear-effect-of-visiting-teacher-service-cut-on-disabled/102735322An East Gippsland teenager says the state government's decision to dramatically cut back a program that supports students with a disability, like her, will make it a lot harder for children in the classroom.

Visiting teachers provide specialised support to children with high needs and also assist their families and teachers in school-related matters. Ms Crouch said a large part of the visiting teacher role was advocating for the child and educating teachers about making their classrooms more accessible. Rebecca said she was worried about how well she would progress at school if Suzanne were to lose her job under the cuts.

"You do your best to advocate for your child but [I'm] quite worried about what will happen if Suzanne gets chopped out of the picture."In Central Victoria, Deaf Hub Bendigo founder Elise Stewart said she and others were shocked to learn of changes to the Visiting Teacher Service."I have been really busy lately in responding to concerned parents of deaf children, teachers with deaf students in their school, and visiting teachers themselves," Ms Stewart said.

Meredith Peace has slammed the decision to cut back the number of specialised visiting teachers in Victoria.
