The Bela Bill is one of several bills before Parliament that proposes changes to the South African Schools Act and the Employment of Educators Act.

CAPE TOWN - There’ve been more disagreements between parties during deliberations on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill known as the Bela Bill, this time on the State's involvement in school admission policies.

Members of Parliament are currently deliberating on the contentious Bela Bill focused on regulating the powers of school governing bodies and their language as well as admission policies.The regulation of school admission policies was one of the most contentious clauses during the provincial public hearings where the public expressed themselves either for or against it.

The Department of Basic Education said the clause on admission will ensure that the voice of those affected by exclusionary policies is heard and also allows for appeals.
