A new way of learning which combines curriculum with culture is seeing high-school students once at risk of dropping out now running to get on the bus.

Students of the Ngurang-gu Yalbilinya education program. It has seen 33 so far, with encouraging rates of attendance.

It’s the start of a new school day, but this isn’t any ordinary school: these boys are part of the Ngurang-gu Yalbilinya program – Wiradjuri for ‘place of learning’. The program, designed by the local Aboriginal community, intertwines curriculum with cultural lessons to help students connect with their identity and increase school engagement.

Ricky Ahsee is one of the cultural advisors of the program. He teaches traditional dances each week and has seen the program's impact firsthand. “It's not just an academic need, if the child or the family suffered trauma that could also affect the student engaging in mainstream classes. So we have to address that as well,” he said.
