What makes a good school? At McClelland College, students and staff battle it out weekly in everything from chess to footy.

It’s Monday lunchtime and McClelland College Year 12 students are squaring off against their teachers.

But he’s been known to betray his own side to help the kids take home the trophy at the end of the year. “This is all about making them want to come to school,” says Hemsley. “Having some fun together, students and teachers, and building those relationships.” At McClelland, teachers are now sending their own kids to the college – “the real test of a school,” says Ferra. “Our kids may not have expensive tutors or elite sports training every morning, but they can do extraordinary things.”

Classrooms are for ‘education not indoctrination’: Liberal SenatorLiberal Senator Sarah Henderson has criticised schools for advertising the ‘Yes’ campaign saying classrooms are for “education, not indoctrination”. “If a school is going to teach children about the referendum, they need to understand both sides of the case,” Ms Henderson told Sky News Australia. “There are other schools which are actively campaigning for the yes case … they are failing students. “Students should be given all relevant information, allow them to make up their own minds, allow them to understand all of the arguments. “I think schools are really failing students if they are not giving them all the information.”
