Chowdhury also emphasized how the the contract added protections by creating an independent grievance process for students facing harassment or discrimination in their workplace – and organizers at other universities like Stanford are seeking similar protections.
Stanford spokesperson Luisa Rapport said that the university “greatly values” its graduate students and referred the Bay Area News Group to the work done by the university’swhich includes expanding supplemental need-based support for graduate students and increasing the university’s Graduate Student Family Grant. Rapport also said that the university is committed to addressing harassment and discrimination and has resources to address such concerns.
For Wesley Guo, a fourth-year PhD student in mechanical engineering, seeing students “gather in solidarity with each other” during the UC strike inspired him to get involved with unionization efforts at Stanford.
