The English teacher, hired as a substitute at Crawford International College in Pretoria, was dismissed for referencing Black people while writing racist phrases on the board. The department says the 82-year-old told pupils not to be hurt when the 'k-word' is used on them because they were not affected by apartheid.
"Her actions are totally unacceptable and have undeniable racist undertones, which will not be tolerated in any aspect of our education sector," says the department's spokesperson Xolani Mkhwemte. "The teacher will also be reported to the South African Council for Educators for necessary investigation and deregistration so that she is not allowed to teach our children any further. It is encouraging that the school has begun providing counselling to the learners affected by this incident."
