It's a shame that she had to do that to get a child Healthcare.

This teacher should be given a ‘Medal!’ There are mitigating factors here, that should override this bureaucratic jibberjabber nonsense! This was for the best interest of the child.

So sad.

So sad in so many ways...what a wonderful woman ❤

That's too bad. She did the right thing. What's more pathetic is that she shouldn't have had to.

What a human thing to do and such a sad and sorry outcome.

Insurance fraud

Yes, she committed a crime. Now get a fund going to reimburse the insurance company and cover attorney fees. Then everyone contact the school board and ask to keep her employed

Medical care should be a right. I can’t imagine that she did this without some extreme reason. Sad in the USA

She’s a hero. Too bad Obama fucked up healthcare. We need to clean a country of illegal immigrants and use the money we waste on them to pay for healthcare. Over 25 billion spent on illegal immigration since January 1, 2019

Deserves a promotion not her resignation

And once again Indiana has shown why it is the state of Mike Pence.

sabou35876529 She didn’t know he was sick - out of all absent students she goes to his home , never calls guardian or contacts -takes him to lunch , haircut then clinic where she lies he’s her son as she has no permission . church / school / laws about adults and minors

She shouldn’t have to apologize for caring for her student and trying to help her student.

Et in loco parentis, in place of the parent. Age old authority of teachers and principals to ACT in place of the parent.

Heart of Gold what more can You ask of an Educator?

Thank God someone cares, wish she was our superintendent.

I love this woman. 💖

I admire her for what she did but what if many did that? It's against the law, it's fraud. Inanycase, she must be a truly wonderful woman.

It is a lapse in judgement to commit insurance fraud. Two wrongs don’t make a right . She did the wrong thing. Her heart was in the right place, but her brain wasn’t .

This is the type of thing that deserves a second chance.

She is a hero in my book. Bought clothes and clean her student’s house? Brought sick student to see a doc Wow! I know what she did is wrong, but she means well.

No good deed goes unpunished.

No good deed goes unpunished.

When I read the original story I was struck by two things...her humanity in seeking care for the student but also the cost wasn’t that great; why not pay out of pocket vs fraud? (Not her responsibility to pay but she assumed responsibility.)

Sad ..

Pains me to say this, but she shouldn't have done that in her position. She should have made the guardians aware of the suspicion of illness. If child was not properly called in sick, he's truant. Call police on suspicion of neglect. Go from there.

She should get a medal! No child under 18 should not be covered by insurance. PERIOD

What a hero.

She risked her job to help her student, what does that say about our healthcare system?

Desperate times

Crime of the century

Run for office!!!

It’s sad that the superintendent couldn’t work with the mother of the child. I have come across similar situations with a student who lives in a car with her mother. One day the girl was wearing open toed shoes in the snow. I bought her some shoes with her mother’s permission.

Her heart was in the right place - it's the country's that isn't that sick children cannot get medical care.

Proving once again the road to unemployment is often paved with good intentions. Btw, that wouldn’t have happened anywhere else the developed world because they’re all smart enough to have universal healthcare.

Being vilified for wanting to help a sick student at any cost. This is what's wrong with this Country.

Sad. But I'm sure cnn will blame on trump as well

She is my hero

Ugh! Sad... the boy would go untreated otherwise?

It is a pretty sad commentary on our country this this kind of behavior is even necessary.

Geez , excuse her for caring. In my book she’s a hero.

CaseySmithermann

She’s a saint! She should of been given a raise! People say humanity is dead, and it is because people who are against this women make it that way. She was doing her job taking care of her students. It’s a shame, a damn shame!

Maybe the parents are deadbeats? Maybe they aren't but I have two kids and and wife and work my ass off to make sure they are all taken care of. I don't know the situation however...damn there has to be a GOOD reason why the child's parents are not taking care of them...right?

Her commitment to a sick student shows that corporate greed (healthcare) is more important than the well being of a sick child. Even though she should not be completely off the hook, she should not have to resign because she showed compassion

Pathetic that is even an issue

People, she was the superintendent, not teaching in a classroom. She wasn't the principal! Why didn't she get the school nurse involved? Superintendent's handle the business aspect of running a school. This doesn't sound right at all. She cleaned his house?

It is nice to see an adult at least try to help this kid. What she did was fraud, but at least she isn't some monster who was trying to hurt the kid.

Hire her back‼️the only one I’ve seen lately that wants to help kids‼️

This is why people don't like America around the world! Heartless and greedy, anything to make a buck! Low life scambags! Corporations come before the people!

She should resign. Fraud is a bad example to set for students. Being a superintendent, and if she wanted to help this child she certainly could afford to pay for a doctor appointment.

What would YOU do in this situation?

She is a HERO 🦸‍♀️

That’s stupid, she should be pardoned.

Yes, in upside down land, we get punished for helping those who need help. This shit is shameful!

It’s called fraud

hero

That’s a shame. Person is trying to help someone and is being punished

That's a damn shame, she was trying to do something good.

Wrong path but I hope she continues to help children with that kind ❤️ ❤️

Pretty sad.....

This is what is wrong with the USA. You’re all talk, no action.

Sad

Who’s starting a go fund me for her so she stays on her feet until she finds a new job?

This really wasn’t any of her business. The child had guardians that were responsible for him. She had no business interfering. If she had concerns about his health, she could have easily discussed it with them.

Let this be a lesson to all the goodsamaritans, no good deed shall go unpunished.

Subverting the law is not to be rewarded despite the cause. “The ends justify the means “ is what has been embraced by the R. party too but at the end of the day, it’s taking the law in your own hands- vigilantism.

so fraud...which is illegal

Intent is everything, the law sorts the rest.

Only in the States!

Shame on the guardian !

Damn! This what we doing now? Salute to her! We are done here

So minors can get birth control prescriptions without their parents and guardians’ consent, but not for medical attention that causes enough concern for the superintendent to follow up with the student? Wow.

Too bad. Just trying to help.

Last time any teacher goes the extra mile for a student in the U.S they see what happens if you do that now

No good deed goes unpunished.

I don't think the whole story is being told. I don't know any superintendent that interacts with students very often. I have read nothing that the student didn't have insurance, most assume that. Why didn't she call the parents and offer to help?

No good deed goes unpunished

I’m sorry you had to resign.. you have a heart of gold!! Shame on the boys guardian! May god forever bless you...

She should be given a medal. This is what humanity looks like and how it is punished in a society ruled by market capitalism.

She tried to help a student.

Sounds to me like someone who really cares about a kid. They need to look at his family life. Clearly the doctor who wrote the script agreed something was wrong. I back the administrator in this case.

Children in the U.K. get free healthcare?

We live in a sad world.

...And this, children, is exactly why the human race is doomed... This article just made me a sadder person

RcsSports Need more people in school districts that care the way she does. She needs a medal for trying to help a sick kid.

That sucks

She actually trying to help but being treated as if she hurt someone; 🤦🏾‍♂️

She should be applauded as a hero. Humanity is about helping others.

Don’t you dare cheat a system that funnels $ only to rich.

It’s insurance fraud, many are criminally/civilly charged so she’s lucky if she is not.

We need all the facts here, but as a Hollywood pitch, you know this woman would have been cast as a hero.

She will bounce back.

sad. she should be hired now by health officials into why we need better healthcare in america

This is how upside down the system is , the fact the student could not get medical help is appealing and she stepped in she is a hero

Give that a woman an award.

What she did was illegal. However, it’s a law that’s put in place to protect corporations and their profits. This is not a law designed with what’s best for individuals.

Only in “Christian” America can an act of kindness be such a crime.

Nothing to be ashamed of here. She was trying to do the right thing.

Next story: father steals bread for family. Now serving 8 years in federal prison.

she was trying to help the kid out.

I hope she gets snapped up by employers who recognize her worth despite her mistake. A mistake I would be proud to own HaveSomeHumanity

Indiana is Mike Pence's state of idiocy isn't it?

See, If you had Universal Healthcare....she could have just taken him to an clinic or Facility for Care.

Even I am not that deceitful. Shame on her.

Sad. Healthcare in America

I hope none of those charges stick

Another example of spineless local dweebs not having it in their DNA to back up a wholesome human being. I hope she gets hired somewhere else with a raise. Ok she was wrong but the details matter.

This will actually open many more doors for this woman. Bravo!

What she did was wrong from the perspective of the legal system which favors corporations. Some might say that, from a human standpoint, multi billion corporations that prey on people’s misfortune are wrong.

Fraud is fraud no matter the reason behind it

I mean she broke the law. Regardless of intent, crime = punishment. Not really much to comment on.

She’s a hero. If I lived in a developing contry without public health care, I would do the same.

Such a travesty. Lindsey Graham should be griping about this arrest.

SenToddYoung SenatorBraun What happened to the promise of fixing our healthcare? This woman should not have to commit ins fraud to get one of her students medical care! And now she loses her job?! This is BS!

God bless her.

She did one thing right... Imagine if she demanded or did something to attempt to justify what she did was right? This kid was not even close to having a life threatening illness that required this teacher to do what she did.

Problem is with the system, not the superintendent

Nah !!! she was told to resign , so sad she only tried to help a sick student get well . What happened to compassion ?

No good deed goes unpunished?!?!! Out System is out of whack!

She should resign. She deserve the position of principal.

Is that a crime?

Why did the parents call the police for their child getting medical care? Why isn’t child welfare services involved for medical neglect?

Like she should get fired for that!!! Give her a promotion please!

The parent turned her in. No good deed goes unpunished. Sad. I wonder if they took the time to investigate the lousy parent?

...so, she shows compassion to the student (a lesson in itself for said student) and then she is dishonoured and humiliated for an act of kindness. IstandwiththeSuperintendent!!

No good deed...

She was wrong, but the amount of pressure and disdain she endured for caring ...is ridiculous.

However if you kill a baby it’s ok. She was trying to save a child.

Did she have a choise?

That’s sad I see nothing wrong what she did smh

Why does your network always highlight and celebrate lawbreakers? This is unbelievable!

She should be rewarded for her humanity

Hero.

Thats balls men!!! This woman is awesome!!!!

But there’s oil in Venezuela SMFH

HERO

So she lied.

We should be applauding her... not firing her!

We either care about children or not, there is no middle ground. In one of the world's wealthiest nations, we have no excuse for failing our people and forcing people to take such extreme efforts to care for another human being.

America has failed as a nation.

No good deed goes unpunished.

This is a tragedy. She shows a heart & compassion n loses her job. We know she made a bad choice but c’mon

anyone can be seen in the emergency room so this is just a law breaker

Isn’t that sad? A superintendent, who CARES about children, resigns her position, while a governor/doctor who KILLS THEM won’t!!

Good for her ? Because of this President I wish more people were trying to do this to help people in need of health care !!

I want to know why the child’s parents didn’t take him to the dr. It could be several reasons but I want to know why.

God bless her

Medical treatment should be an universal thing in the USA. What a shame..

This is so wrong she helped a child this country is so fing messed up

GovHolcomb Give NYGovCuomo a call. New York State has Child Health Plus, every child has insurance. Also have child welfare look in on this student. What parent would call the police on a person who helped get medical care for their child. This women should get an award.

So this is what medical care in the US has come to? Gofundme campaigns and lying to get affordable care? Canadians and Australians have affordable health care for all. Why can’t Americans?

Yes we should send her to prison for caring about the well being of a child. Jesus, this woman deserves an award! I wish all people cared this much for our children.

Scandal

Morality vs The Law. Laws don’t always align with your morals, but should they? My answer is human decency has to be ingrained in every fabric of the law. Laws have to make sense and align with our values. I can insure anyone with life insurance but not medical. Why🤷🏽‍♀️

Fraud is fraud. She knew it was wrong. Slap on the wrist is my vote.. but..she still broke the law.

It’s a sad state we live in.

This is where the politicians step forward... ❤️

There are 2 tragedies here, the school system lost a caring administrator and people in this country are still having to go w/o health care while tax payers are on the hook for coverage of multi millionaires in Congress.

That's what happens in a country where many people can't afford medical treament. She deserves a medal

And this “Smitherman told police that in the past she and her husband bought clothes for the student and helped clean his house.” - and here she was just trying to help a child who’s guardian is clearly lacking in the guardian department. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Deserves a fundraising to start an NGO. golden heart. The World should rise for her welfare and wellbeing

All of us that live in countries where our taxes pay for feee healthcare still don’t understand how the most powerful nation is not able to do it. Well, we do understand, is because some guys will be filthy rich while others die, we don’t understand why you put up with it..

I think she should get a raise.

Bless you ma'am

Have to admire her sacrifice

His guardians should be ashamed.

Wow... Seriously, MAGA.

Shouldn’t she being promoted instead!?!?!? This woman is a humanitarian ambassador.... humanitarian forthepeople healthfirst

That's just sad. Someone get her a job in private section that actually care about Children healthcare!

She should be getting a medal.

The horror of trying to help someone-wouldn't it be great if all Americans had universal healthcare

She is a hero.

she showed compassion and is now unfairly punished , other schools should offer to hire her.

I think her heart was in the right place. Her head, not so much.

Also, CNN likes to create rather than report news. Here is your chance to do it right. Step up and help her.

This woman deserves some kind of an award instead of Punishment. She is a real hero, a brave teacher and humanist Indeed.

School board should have said,' What she did was wrong and illegal. Regardless board is behind her 100% and if anyone is demanding her job, let us send our condolences now because you will be disappointed. We also beg her not to quit. Board has a fund for any legal fees she has.'

Fraud is fraud.

Not fair, she is a hero

Not all.heros wear capes. Where is the go fund me campaign for her?

So our healthcare system is shit, teacher actually tries to help student and is charged. Maybe next time a politician proposes Medicare for all CNN anchors don't yell back ' How are we going to pay for it?!?'

wow what a monster

Pity. Seems she had the proper temperament to do the job!

If anything it points out our broke medical system. She had to lie so a fellow human being could get well.

I see the problem when it comes to insurance fraud.. But on a human level.. I applaud her..

This lady is a HERO. NOT a criminal.

America 2019

.... Bad example for a good cause...

Had to resign for doing something any mother would do(despite it's not her child) what's this world coming to

Praise God that in our world that has lost its humanity, we could still find kind hearted people like her.

I call bullschmidt. This was done to get in the MSM and get sympathy. Other, better options were available

So caring gets you charged? Morality and the law are not bedfellows

People ask why don’t our educators care? This! This is why! She tried to do a noble thing and she gets arrested. Where are the boys parents and why didn’t they take him to the doctor? They should be charged with neglect.

Shameful.

Say it with me. MEDICARE FOR ALL!!!!

what a sick society where someone has to lie so a child can get the medical attention he/she needs.

“Checked” on him... with all these teachers screwing kids. It might not be so innocent?

Something seems off

Remember, we’re talking about Indiana. The state that gave us Mike Pence. I’m surprised they didn’t make her go to conversion therapy.....just because.

Anyone know how we can support her?

She should run for office.

What a joke the American health system is! All because of $ the rich will lose if u brought in Australian type Medicare!

There are more blatant forms of fraud that should be punishable. What she did was wrong but at least she showed she cared. This shouldn't be a considered a crime tbh.

And there’s what’s wrong with the not-so-great American health care system.

No good deed....

All men who give fake news should resign no matter where he or she is works, President or teacher or so on

Justice was not served, she did a completely noble thing and the “law” is protecting the insurance company!

So she wanted to help her student. Seems like a noble thing to do

meanwhile, our President lies every single day, bilks the system, offends minorities, ignores Congress, demeans staff, but who cares, right?

We need more such teachers 💐, God bless her

She shouldn’t resign for helping to save life, she deserves a promotion

Hero

I think she is a saint. But she was mandated and should of called child services if she thought there was neglect.

Story says her and her husband had bought clothes for the boy and helped clean his house in the past. I think this story is missing a LOT more info. Seems like an odd situation from what we've been presented...

To be fair, she's lucky she's not doing prison time so far; she did do something illegal- trying to defraud an insurance company. Also, there's more of an issue because what if it were a more serious condition and misleading doctors might cause dire medical problems.

You can't do anything fun anymore.

FACTS NEVER AT CNN. What are facts say ocasio cortez .. can we turn them into illegal voters says Hillary Clinton and obama

I applaud her for stepping up.

America: where poor people are left for dead and good people are pusinished.

A superintendent's job is to manage schools and school administrators. Why is she interacting with students in the first place? Something is fishy as hell here.

Why didn't the child's actual guardians take him to the doctors?

FACTS LAST AT CNN

At least she stepped up.

What a monster.

Well that is insurance fraud, sooo yeah she should be fired.. she should be in jail

She's a f'n hero

deserves a promotion for actually caring about students

School superintendent who helped sick student resigns amid insurance fraud chargesCasey Smitherman cited the attention she has received as a reason for her decision. She was charged last week in an insurance fraud case, after she allegedly used her son's insurance information to get treatment for a sick student. She should be given an award for bravery, and selfless service to help a child! She did the right thing. She should be cheered for helping others. We have forgotten what we should be doing. I support you. A child needed help and you provided it. A prescription for antibiotics is no reason for criminal charges. The world is screwed up.
