Major Collision Investigation Unit Senior Sergeant Paul Lineham said early investigations suggested the bus driver had seen the truck approaching him from behind and tried to accelerate to get out of its path. He said teachers and parents rushed to the crash site from the school to comfort the children, who were crying and screaming on the side of the road.
Investigators could be seen checking and photographing the seatbelts on the bus after it was righted.Royal Children’s Hospital chief executive officer Bernadette McDonald said seven children aged between five and 11 remain at the hospital, including one child in intensive care and six others in a serious condition.
“Our emergency department, our theatre teams, and our trauma team did beautifully, as well as every staff member in the hospital,” she said.
