In back-to-back education announcements, Ontario parents heard the rhetoric of “getting back to the basics,” “what matters most: math, reading, and literacy,” and “jobs of tomorrow.” What is missing from all of these announcements is any mention of “equity.”
Sadly, on Sunday and Monday, the Ontario Education Newsroom thought it was best NOT to mention equity even once in their press releases. In fact, their “Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act” mentions equity zero times; math, reading and literacy once each; and “Power,” “Sales,” “Lease,” and “Property” an astounding 59 times.
This resulted in me hiding my marks and making questionable decisions in secondary school. These barriers hit everyone differently and in a different time and place and perhaps with less other privileges, my future could have been painted differently. As an educator, I know and see the complexity of factors that improve the chances of student achievement or not. Feelings of inclusion, brought about by equity, are one of them; yet, all this rhetoric of “back to basics” with no mention of equity, sounds like dialing back the clock 30 years to when I was in school.This is not empty paranoia. We have seen an increase in discriminatory rhetoric targeted at the education sector and its workers over the past few years.
Equity requires authoritarian and discriminatory policy. It is the antithesis of equality and freedom.

Maybe if we retained the standards we have, rather than chucking them out due to misguided compassion our society would be better. Math is racist only to some fuzzy minded leftists. HS Graduation should mean something, but it’s been rendered meaningless.
But our education system fails all of them: equity, literacy, and numeracy. See how many violent crimes in our society and how many hate crimes. Discrimination exists even though virtually all members of our society grow up via our education system. Have we a more equal society?

It would be fantastic if Ontario implemented school vouchers like many states have. You can either attend the substandard public system or go to a school that will truly educate your children.

I LOVE how they always use the terminology that students face discriminations and systemic barriers to completing their education! In layman’s terms that means giving student credit for not turning up, send them off to college to fail, let’s just keep the grad numbers up
