in Upper Arlington, the juniors in the marine biology class silently surveyed the furniture in the common areas, communicating with hand gestures as they tried to navigate ropes and measuring tools.
The Bonaire trip will be led by Jeff Terwin, head of the school and a marine biologist who has conducted more underwater dives than he can count. He told students in a class earlier this month that the point of their silent surveying exercise was a just a representation of the challenges they will face when they are surveying underwater and can't speak.
Terwin said some Wellington students have traveled internationally as part of school programs in the past, but now the WISE program is available to every Wellington junior. He said international travel can have a tremendous impact on students and offer them valuable life experiences. Anna Taft, a Wellington School alumna and daughter of former Ohio Gov. Robert Taft, is partnering with the school throughto link some of the Wellington students with communities the foundation already has connections within Ecuador.
