NEW: A Colorado student protesting gun violence at the Capitol was lifted from his chair and hauled out of the room by police, prompting an angry response from several lawmakers who say the use of force was 'disproportionate'

Another teenager then stands up behind them and asks “How many more kids will die.” A House sergeant standing behind that student placed both of his hands on the student’s shoulders and pushed him back down into his seat. Lawmakers said they were calling out to troopers from the House floor asking them to stop.

Master Trooper Gary Cutler, a spokesperson for the state patrol, said one person was removed from the Capitol and barred for the day, while others were just removed from the gallery. They did not arrest anyone.Peyton Carter, a sophomore at North High School, said in an interview she was the first one who yelled. She said “it was rude,” but also “it felt like we weren’t being heard” by policymakers.

Keira Mulligan, a sophomore at North High School, said she filmed the incident and corroborated Carter’s account. Prior to the forced removal, another student was voluntarily leaving, she said. The student who was hauled away “wasn’t being disruptive at all,” though he seemed to be refusing to leave.

“They come in and they target one of friends — who is a brown boy, a Latino — by saying, ‘You need to leave,’” said Garcia, who, with several other legislators, attempted to intervene with the troopers as they removed the student from the building. “They’re not leaving, so they yank him out of his chair.”

The incident comes three weeks after a shooting at Denver East High School sparked student protests in the Capitol. The decision to remove the student Thursday left several lawmakers shaken and angry. The situation escalated unnecessarily, Sirota and Garcia said, and the students were likely unfamiliar with House rules. Sen. Julie Gonzales, a Denver Democrat, tweeted that she was “livid and heartbroken.

They were giving a lawful order. 'Several' of our lawmakers want to teach our kids to disrespect the law?

Just get the hell up when ordered to for disrupting (the girl) and obstructing (the boy) like you're supposed to and no one gets carried out. And they have the gall to make the cops out to be the bad guys. 🤨 This society is going to hell in a handbasket.

Police have no chill. They just know violence.

These kids need to learn that there is a right way and a wrong way to affect change. Reasoned debate and discussion are the right way. Tantrums are the wrong way.

Cringe behavior. This would be reprehensible if this happened to anyone but it is even more disgusting that it happened to a student. What the actual fuck is wrong with this country?

If only Ashli Babbit got this treatment.

Indeed. I was in the House and when I saw it happen I ran to that student. I spent an hour with him on the Capitol steps waiting for his mom to pick him up. I hope I gave him some comfort and assurance.

This is entirely appropriate. What is wrong with the weak entitled progressives? You are not special!

Unbelievable.

I lost custody of my children for asking for changes in family courts we were not disruptive and we had a permit to assemble. This sounds like some manipulation took place and perhaps those that had strong views on guns influenced the decision to take this horrific approach.

This is why cops in schools will blowup in everyone’s face.

Nah, a government response that’s disproportionate? Preposterous!

GovofCO If you were standing here during this why did you not stop the officers and stand with the student?

Student should be in school learning, not pushing his/her/they opinions on grown adults.

Rainesford Gross

Looked appropriate to me. Your right to free speech does not include trespassing or disrupting official business. Didn't we learn that on Jan. 6?

Probably because this is a well-armed state. Controlled entrances and multiple armed guards. Even in Utah, we have parents that do not parent. They allow schools and screens to raise their kids.
