The Reds and Patriotes advanced to the semifinals with wins in their respective quarter-final games at Eastlink Centre on March 16. The second-seeded Patriotes, the Ontario University Athletics conference champions, won 4-1 over the seventh-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies, the runner-up in the Atlantic University Sport conference.
Before 2,345 fans, a third-period goal by Simon Pinard at 4:58 of the third period broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the difference. UNB’s Cody Morgan opened the scoring at 10:06 of the first period, and Phelix Martineau answered for the Stingers at 15:20 of the middle frame. “That’s what you need and is a good sign for our group. It’s not just one line or two D or one goalie. To have strength as a team is a valuable component this time of year.”
