Saint Mary's Huskies second-year defenceman Justin MacPherson has twice been named to the Atlantic conference’s first all-star team and has collected 48 points in two season, tops among all blue-liners in the nation. - SMU ATHLETICSMany hockey careers were altered because of the pandemic. The six-foot-one defenceman was in his fourth major junior season – and second with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers – when COVID-19 shuttered the sports world in March 2020.
“Playing in Slovakia was definitely an interesting experience,” MacPherson recalled in a recent interview. But the language barrier was difficult, and it was difficult reaching out to schools and talking to coaches, especially with the time change and that no one could travel.” “Tyler probably cares more than anyone else in our dressing room and it shows,” MacPherson said of the reigning Atlantic university coach of the year. “It’s pretty hard to find a coach that’s as passionate as he is.”
“It’s not very often you get to wear the Canadian jersey,” MacPherson said. “It was amazing how much every guy bought in. We had the best players from each team and guys were happy to play on the fourth line or in a shutdown role or to just go out and win faceoffs. It was fascinating to see. Everyone put their ego aside and did whatever it took to win.”
The Huskies are the seventh seed at nationals and will face the No. 2-ranked and defending U Sports champion UQTR Patriotes in the first quarter-final game, Thursday at noon.
