Mark Kilroy was a 21-year-old senior at the University of Texas at Austin when he was abducted in Matamoros, Mexico, in March 1989 while on spring break. He was tortured and killed by his captors. It was spring break 1989, but for one Texas college student, a week of sun and sand was brutally cut short when he was kidnapped in Matamoros, Mexico, and soon after killed at a nearby ranch.
The group would park near the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville and cross the U.S.-Mexico border on foot. Most nights, they found themselves at Sergeant Pepper’s night club in downtown Matamoros. On March 13, Kilroy and his friends crossed into Matamoros just before 10:30 p.m. as usual, but this time, they decided to check out a new bar, Los Somberos, that had a short line and enticing bright, neon lights.
Later, under hypnosis, one of the men in the group said he remembered seeing a young Hispanic man with a scar on his face, wearing a blue plaid shirt, approach Kilroy and ask, “Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere?” Though Kilroy’s case was initially treated as a routine missing person case, concern quickly grew, and U.S. and Mexican police conducted a massive search for the 21-year-old. Loved ones from Kilroy’s hometown traveled to Matamoros to search for him, his parents offered up to a $15,000 reward, and his case appeared on the TV show “America’s Most Wanted” — but to little effect.
