Accused Santa Fe School shooter to once again be evaluated to determine if mentally fit for trial

Judge Jeth Jones appointed Dr. Joseph Penn to evaluate Dimitrios Pagourtzis at a status conference Friday, and hinted he’d be open to rescinding a change of venue order, should the case ever move to trial. Nick Poehl, attorney for Pagourtzis, argued Jones must provide an explanation and evidence for why he believes the defendant’s status has changed to order a competency hearing so quickly after the February decision.

The news comes about a month after Jones finalized an order to keep Pagourtzis committed for up to a year at the North Texas State Hospital in Vernon based on of two doctors. It’s not yet clear what might have changed to convince the judge to call for a new evaluation.

This guy is a lot luckier than Nikolas Cruz. While Cruz has been spending this whole year in a state prison, Pagourtzis has been penned up in a mental hospital where he hasn’t been having to eat prison food.
