University of Cape Town (UCT) students have joined the fight for accommodation and the cancellation of historic debt.

Elijah Moholola, speaking on behalf of the university, said the council met on Monday evening to consider the SRC’s proposal to lift fee blocks as a blanket concession but decided it was not possible to do this.He said: “UCT’s student fee debt has increased by close to fourfold, with some fee payers making no payment at all. The university’s cumulative historic student debt now stands at more than R385m, and more than half of this is for 2022 fees.

Heavily armed police called on students for protesting against fee blocks & evictions from reses. Proudly sponsored by Sue Harrison acting VC. Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng never called cops on us in her 5 years.

This is utter bullshit UCT_news especially when paying parents are always declined at your institution even with GOOD MATRIC MARKS this is the garbage u rather tolerate FANTASTIC

UCT student protest reignited after fee block removal decisionOn Thursday evening, protests at the University of Cape Town (UCT) were reignited by students in response to the institution's decision not to remove fee blocks for students with past debts: Ridiculous on so many levels. Grateful I don’t have any friends or loved ones that attend this institution. Such a shame And what is wrong with having a police presence to protect the institution from potential damage. I'll put my money if there was no police present at some point there will be rampant damage to property. Modern day students are driven by emotion and lack the capacity to reason.
