My childhood dream was to be a pediatric cardiologist; but when I realized the sight of blood made me feel faint, I decided cardiology wasn’t for me. I knew I wanted a career that made a lasting impact on others, so after thinking about my passions, my search led me to become a teacher. I loved teaching; I learned so much. Perhaps the important lesson I learned was how hard school can be for a child whose heart is broken. Students who are hurting or afraid cannot learn.
One of the most important ways I do that is by educating my school on the effects of trauma and by providing teachers with strategies and resources for supporting students in the classroom. I’ve also learned how to use data with surgical precision, which in my case, means using discipline data to make small, strategic steps toward change.Although it has taken several years to develop, I have helped my school alter the “lens” through which it views students.
Positive change requires community partnerships, too. For example, we set up calm-down corners in every classroom and created a sensory room where students learn and practice self-regulation. However, neither of these resources would be available without close partnerships with the PTA and other community funders.Clearly, the work of school counseling is not for the faint of heart. It requires dedication, research, a commitment tolearning, and the confidence to take risks.
