The governor also revealed the state will use $120 million in federal coronavirus relief funds for grants to pay for sorely needed facility space to house pre-K classes.

on Wednesday announced further expansion of tuition-free, state-funded public preschool in New Jersey — something he touted as “one of the best investments we can make in the future of our state.”

All of this, Murphy said, is part of his longstanding goal to gradually make state taxpayer-funded preschool universal in New Jersey, open to all children without their families having to pay tuition. He has admitted thatMurphy said tuition-free pre-K not only provides children with “high-quality early education that builds a foundation for lifelong learning” but helps families who otherwise might have to shell out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to pay for private classes or daycare.

Right now, only some public school districts in New Jersey have received funding for pre-K. Others offer programs but families have to pay tuition to join. Murphy’s administration says it has increased pre-K funding by more than $310 million since he became governor in 2018, adding more than 18,000 seats in New Jersey. The state has now filled nearly 70,000 seats, or roughly 1 in 3 of New Jersey’s 210,000 eligible students, officials have said.
