The Harris County District Attorney's Office on Wednesday night confirmed that charges had been filed but provided no other information because the accused person is a minor.MORE ON HOUSTONCHRONICLE.COMDuring a news conference at the school district last week, the mother said the district discovered the assaults after reviewing security footage of a bus ride during which her child's backpack was thrown out a bus window.
Security video showed the 6-year-old Lola Mae Carter Academy student being lured to the back of the bus by at least one middle schooler who sexually abused the child. The mother said the older student told her child the assaults were a game and not to tell anyone or the 6-year-old would “lose the game.”The mother and community leaders said school district employees failed to protect the child from harm and notify the mother of the assaults as soon as they happened.
The district said it contacted Child Protective Services and the Aldine ISD Police Department to investigate the assaults seen on the video. The mother said she had complained to the district about her child’s wellbeing on the bus for months before the abuse was uncovered. On Wednesday, the District Attorney's Office said the 6-year-old child was being offered counseling at the Children's Assessment Center, a nonprofit group that specializes in the treatment of child sexual abuse.
