A child-advocacy nonprofit on Tuesday declared its opposition to the state allowing the former Glen Mills Schools to reopen for the first time since a 2019 child-abuse and cover-up scandal led to its closure.with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, the Clock Tower Schools was granted a provisional license to initially operate a residential treatment program for 20 court-ordered boys
The nonprofit Clock Tower agreed to pay for an on-campus, independent monitor, and DHS officials said they will provide extra oversight during the provisional period. The state denied Clock Tower’s application for a new license last April. with the Chester County Intermediate Unit, which had a contract with Glen Mills to educate children at the school. The settlement didn’t resolve other claims in the ongoing lawsuit.
Children First in its statement Tuesday criticized having former Glen Mills-era employees work for Clock Tower. The state should require 100% new staff and board members with no prior history to Glen Mills, Children First said.

Letter: Why would allowing parents to choose appropriate education for their child destroy public school?I’ve never understood the logic behind denying parents a choice in their child’s education. Since the public schools are funded by public money — money that came from tax paying parents — why shouldn’t parents be able to use their money to fund an education that is appropriate for their child? And why would allowing parents to choose an appropriate education for their child destroy a public school? If the school is providing a good education, it will continue to flourish. If not, a child should not be forced to suffer the consequences. Who is doing that? There are public funded schools and private ones. Choose. Parents have always been free to choose how their children are educated, but why should the very public you want to exempt your kids from be forced to pay for it? Child-free tax payers don’t get any personal benefit- we pay for public benefit, not your personal choices. Thing is my children are long out of public school and my taxes are now going towards your choice rather then a community education, now you can use my tax dollars and put your child in a program I may not agree with(example: a religious academy) why should I pay for that?

California’s schools need to adapt to the state budget woesAt the state level, policymakers should resist the urge to funnel education dollars through specific grants and earmarks. Education is not a common good. There are no public goods anymore. Our elections are supposed to be fair--and voters said NO to school funding. During recessions, schools get cut first and they better be prepared.
