Letter: 'I’ve never understood the logic behind denying parents a choice in their child’s education.'

Of course, teachers’ unions and organizations that represent the educational establishment have always opposed school choice and they’ve always had the money to fight it. I was a substitute teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District and saw first-hand how lack of choice impacts education. There were some wonderful teachers, but the unions and organizations that controlled the school district represented the teachers and administrators, not the students or their parents.

It appears that with HB215 passing, Utah can empower parents and help students. Let’s hope it happens.

Choice is fine. Taking money from public education is not. Public education can do more with that money than any private entity.

Can I use these vouchers to send my kids to other public school districts? If not, will these vouchers cover the majority of tuition if I want to send my kids to a private school, or will this only benefit wealthy families that were already planning on private schools?

schools are funded off of enrollment. you pull students out, the public school still needs to operate, but they have to cut of teachers. The student fails out of private schools, public schools have to pick up the student. See the connection?

Hey —opeds are important to publish, but not when they spread complete misunderstandings of reality. Let’s not boost this notion that school choice is a new concept that’s only possible by stripping public schools of funding and giving private institutions taxpayers’ cash.

Anyone is free to send their offspring to any school they want….provided they can afford the tuition. This latest stunt is merely them chipping away, albeit slowly, at public education because in the end, there’s money to be made privatizing education. Follow the money.

I've never understood why the Jordanschooldistrict denied my child skipping a grade (4th). She tested 7 grades ahead in Language Arts/English, but only one grade ahead in Math.... So she was bored out of her mind with a Teacher, who had no idea had to handle a gifted child.

Parents have always had choice. Not the public’s job to fund private education.

Agreed.

. I'm going to play while others pay...... .

Parents' choice has never been denied. Public funds for private schools has. And should be. Parents can send their children to private or parochial schools. Don't ask the rest of us to subsidize it.

If only there was a, 🤔, a parent, teacher, organization…a PTA!(feel free to use it!). Maybe there should be a roll call for parentd, mandatory participation. Not aware of your kid’s education? Look in a mirror you’ll see the issue. I say/confess that as a parent of 4…

They have literally always, always had that choice

You're undermining more support going to public schools by subsidizing vouchers for private schools. If the money was sent to public schools instead it could be used to better the system for all students.

Being from Toquerville, let me see if this makes sense. I would like a UDOT voucher for my road taxes so that I can fix all the crappy streets around my home in SLC. My neighbors can pool our $ and pay a private company. I don't care about rural roads, I want choice.

Sure there are alternate methods of education but eviscerating an institution that has served our common welfare and good for hundreds of years to serve your selfish, self centered ego, is what I cannot stomach. You serve your self interest.

You don’t get to use the taxes for state parks to help pay for your tickets to Lagoon, even if you'd really rather take your kids there instead of Goblin Valley.

It's the many paying for the privileges of the few that we object to.

You've always had that choice. Taking money away from public schools doesn't magically create that option. The most likely outcome of school vouchers is private schools raise their tuition, knowing they're now being subsidized, and public schools continue to take in the rest.

Why should I have to pay for you to indoctrinate your children? If you choose to do so in a private hateful school then do it. however, the other side of that coin is that those schools don't have to accept students they don't like where as public schools do.

There isn’t a single private school in Toquerville lmao

Thing is my children are long out of public school and my taxes are now going towards your choice rather then a community education, now you can use my tax dollars and put your child in a program I may not agree with(example: a religious academy) why should I pay for that?

Isn’t it funny how the same people who want to “empower” parents to make decisions about their own children’s education are the same ones who don’t believe parents can make informed medical decisions with a doctor? 🤷‍♂️

Parents have always been free to choose how their children are educated, but why should the very public you want to exempt your kids from be forced to pay for it? Child-free tax payers don’t get any personal benefit- we pay for public benefit, not your personal choices.

Who is doing that? There are public funded schools and private ones. Choose.

Letter: Revolutions have been fought over abuses like thisHave I read correctly? My state tax dollars are actually going to be used to pay for some students’ private education? And this state thinks this is democratic? And the governor signs such a law? And a lobbyist for these affronts says she wants to destroy the public education system? And the public has absolutely no say in a matter that concerns this use of their taxes? This is low brow. 'Wait! My taxes don't go to the thing I like?!' Lol. ‘Revolutions have been fought over *abuses* like this’ - sl trib inciting insurrection. You’d think libs would support money going to homeschoolers. It’ll disproportionately help moms This is what happens when there is no accountability. Radical elements take over.
