Australia, the most multicultural country in the world, the protege of the West, free of capital punishment, all for reform, regarding education, Australia should teach colloquial Aussie accent to start with, but apparently unintelligent people are educating the nation for money.
Women have hijacked the education system and media. I am all for gender equality when it is gender equal in terms of the male and female sexes complementing each other such as biological metabolism and sensory perception but it seems if not women expressing words it is god money.

For what it’s worth, Marxism values education and probably delivers a very gender-equal, proper education system.
And those who, well just can’t... they tweet inane banality
Seems counter productive & cause extra hsc anxiety. IMO compassion, determination, tolerance & patience make better teachers than good marks.
And up their salaries and their social status.
Good move there are too many students at uni who struggled with basic math in my experience
Teachers need to be shown more social and financial R E S P E C T.
Same for journalists?
Let uni's do their job. Not all students should graduate.
students who fail English should be barred from becoming teachers.
Countdown to teacher shortage in 9,8,7....
OMG a good teacher DOESN'T need the highest ATAR, they need the desire to teach children, especially for younger grades.
ATAR reflects supply and demand for courses. So maybe we should ask ourselves why is it that not many people want to do teaching?
They should be directed into politics instead
Teaching is a vocation. High ATAR doesn't guarantee a good teacher. In my years as a parent of school aged children in the 90's I remember only two teachers in my children's lives that I thought were outstanding. Neither of them were geniuses but were great teachers.
In my yime going through my degree, understanding theory of learning is important, however Practicum is where the real learning starts! Therefore, teaching could actually benefit more from an apprenticeship approach where we spend more timenin the classroom with a lead educator
It is not ATAR that makes a good teacher, it is the ability to teach. tanya_plibersek billshortenmp ScoMo
I very nearly dropped out of high school because of mental health issues and a bad home-life. My final grades were terrible. But, all the same, last year I completed a PhD. I am more than qualified to teach. ATAR does not define your intelligence or future capacities.
fantastic, but they should be ok for labor candidates
Raising the bar for the teaching of our future leaders is a bold step. Something AusVotes2019 should be based on. Details can be refined later. Well place, tanya_plibersek!
MayneReport dumb laughable auspol
If the top 30% of students choose to do Medicine, Law, Engineering, Physiotherapy, Dentistry etc who will do teaching? You can't force them.
Because it’s proven fact that (a) ATAR measures all abilities: and (b) everyone gives maximum effort to attain their best ATAR
MayneReport Wow what a biased inaccurate headline . “Barred” implies never ever. Which is definitely not the case
But can they still become politicians?
Pay the right wage and you’ll get the quality
Wonder what Plibers scored and was geography one of her majors.... Africa is still a continent Plibers not a country
They'll be feed into the shop stewards school of incompetence instead....
Should also be the same with Nursing
Are we really just accepting that an ATAR is a a valid measure of intelligence and capacity for success? Students who dedicate their time and effort to leadership, community involvement and social justice may not get the best ATAR but may make amazing teachers
For how long? Perhaps they will become better students when they are older. That happens.
If low-scoring ATAR students are to be rejected from teaching what will happen to Labor's support base?
They should become politicians
What about becoming MPs as well!
Shouldn’t we be measuring the performance & outcomes of university students studying education, not the ATAR scores of young ppl who may or may not have been ready for the challenges of standardised testing at the age of 17 or 18. Success does not have a prescribed timeline!
PCKJ3627 abcnews, talk to experts like MarciaDevlin and look at evidence from FedUni and other RUN teaching excellence & graduate employment outcomes, ATAR is not a predictor of success at Uni or excellence as a professional, thnx
Up wages to attract higher performing candidates. I know many excellent teachers who have left because after 7+ years they aren’t paid anything close to their piers in corporate jobs. teacherpayrise
ATAR isn't everything, but to not even pass indicates a lot about someone's motivation levels. Expecting/requiring a person to at least pass and allowing a bridging course of some sort seems like a sound requirement to me.
HanrattyMichael How many people achieved low ATAR’s and have become successful? ATAR’s are outdated. We may just see fewer people entering the teaching profession!!
Is it too much to ask that those who have to deliver the curriculum actually understand it?
wendoureeswans Banning low scoring applicants is not going to solve the teacher shortage. If the top applicants are not selecting teaching, they need to look at why, and solve that. MakeTeachingAttractive
It would be delightful to have most teachers with reasonable LLN scores.
Perhaps the focus should be on a back to basics approach to the curriculum. We need to stop blaming the teachers
So now AustralianLabor wakes up to what a terrible decision it was to uncap places in the first place and they want us to applaud them? *slow hand clap*
Low hanging fruit political move. How about looking at how we can improve ATAR scores with our kids.
I think the issue has more to do with the HSC than the ATAR score - when you have a form of assessment such as the HSC that does not allow students to show their best, you can’t then penalise them through exclusion from university courses
unis have been taking too many students with low ATAR Unis have lost their function as edu institution but they have been busy trying to make money by taking unqualified &foreign students
...But also free university for all! 😂
but if they are female can become senators on the labor ticket
The best teachers I had in High School were the ones who had a career before becoming teachers (even if it had been only a few years). This was especially true of the Science/Maths teachers.
Labor is attempting to set the bar higher for teaching admission. Just like other professions. All Children deserve the highest standards of education .
Is there ANY evidence that low ATAR teachers are low quality teachers?
Thank God at last someone’s had a brain wave.
Or consider ...
Compare. Contrast. Then consider how Finland is doing in PISA & other international educational measures ...
Finally!!!!
What’s her position on convicted drug dealers being the director general of the Department of Education? Is that ok?
Anyone with a high atar isn’t going into teaching in those salaries. Unless of course it’s a true calling. The Govt needs to get real and provide salaries that are going to attract the brightest. Additionally, atar should be just one criteria. Personal attributes must count too
ESPN_Mosese thoughts pn this
Oh really. There will be no teachers under this plan. Do you think the union will agree. Definitely NOT. Another statement of mis fact from Clown Castle.
Where will the next gen of teachers come from then ?
This seems a wise move. Bright students know when teachers are struggling to understand what they are presenting and it affects their morale and motivation. This is why teachers are taught to shush students who question what they teach instead of engaging them in debate.
TANIA whilst Is support Labours efforts to imprive the quality of our teacher graduates, Is disagree with your premise that only students ewith a TAR above 80 should be allowed to become teachers. I became a TAFE teacher at 39 after 22 YRS ADF service and taught for 25 YRS.
Not very inclusive.
Its to do with pay. You'll not get good teachers unless the pay is good.
More interventionist Government... preventing capable young people from their dreams... Despite being one of the most exceptional strategic minds - using this example a young Richard Branson suffers dyslexia and arguably would fail miserably on any ATAR therefore couldn’t teach
Bad move. High ATAR doesn't mean that the person will be a poor teacher. The atar doesn't mean that much at all. It just indicates the students abilities at the time the test was taken, not how they will perform at another time. Reliance on formal assessment should be reduced
Teaching is a gift - not something you learn! And certainly doesnt come with an IQ minimum or an ATAR score! Missing the point yet again ALP!
Good
Bring on the teacher shortage.
Reminder Australia: Rudd/Gillard/Rudd/Shorten/Plibersek/Bowen/Swan/TOTAL & UTTER DISASTER! The past teaches us about the future! Don’t risk this mob of proven imbeciles ever again!
Bullshit idea. People develop differently over their lives. Stop a child following a dream. What score do you need to be a politician SFA by the looks of this country’s reputation.
I’ve got a bridge for sale
Get rid of the Marxists in education at state and federal level and the problem will go away.
While it’s good to start with brighter students, doesn’t this imply that Unis are unable to educate or improve poorer students, and that they are actually passing incompetents? What do they think students do in those four years?
School teaching via TAFE on a Cert IV TA qualification having done non-ATAR courses
I have no problem with this. I've been a teacher for 13 years and the amount of pre service teachers that didn't pass school or never sat ATAR dont actually have the academic rigour needed bit expect to teach such courses is not uncommon. Also a lot of teachers go into primary
We need different varied criteria not just ATAR score. Standardised testing results on their own are not an indicator of skill, passion or learning intelligence.
Bit unfair....
High scores don’t guarantee the ability to teach!
Luke_Roberts16 oh no
Have to pay them a lot more then
Wonder how AEUfederal feels about tanya_plibersek saying their members are sub standard at their jobs and they should never have been accepted.
Feels like we are missing the issue. If these students are passing and becoming teachers, what does it say about the courses and our expectations. It’s not their fault. If we had the right instruction and courses then we would be assured that graduating teachers had the skills .
We also need to consider this in terms of who can run for Federal Parliament.
This is important Nobody wants low scoring teachers in schools.
You will never get the top grass until you pay teachers better salaries.
Plibersek for PM, please!!
what about MP? The simpleton that fill federal & state parliaments is unacceptable auspol
Given there's already a growing shortage of teachers, this is unlikely to help
tanya_plibersek is a lying hypocrite, JuliaGillard notwithstanding, when it comes to the debacle masquerading as education in Australia. How did it come to this? 1. Universities hijacked by leftie feel good lecturers. 2. Teacher training goes soft option. 3. Classroom chaos.
Great decision!!
The effective way is to improve school infrastructure & increase pay. Public school building conditions & access to quality learning materials are starved of $$$. On international parity, teaching pay has fallen. A low score ATAR bar punitive. -
Labor were the ones who screwed up the system by uncapping entry. This led to the lowering of standards (and admission criteria) drastically.
😂 low-grade school teachers - that’s Labor’s primary source of achieving their gender quota in parliament!
So what happens when there aren’t sufficient numbers of graduate teachers to replace those that leave the profession?
Maybe increase wages, and attract higher scoring students to teaching. You can barely live on teachers wages. All this would do is impose more teacher shortages in future.
Melbourne Uni forces grad students into an IQ test as a condition of entry into the masters of teaching. Pathetic.
Presumably they would still have to pass the University subjects regardless of what ATAR they got so what’s the issue. Setting better/higher standards as a prerequisite for candidacy for parliament would better serve/meet community expectations.
How about we ban low-scoring ATAR students from becoming politicians?
dumb.
Those who can't, teach. 9NewsAUS
Utter rot - Labor have facilitated a culture of ‘anyone can do a University course’ like teaching for DECADES - lip service appealing for the popular vote 👎😡 auspol
Currently only low scoring students apply for the teachers courses.
not sure why the top 10% would want to be teachers when the salaries available to teachers is no where near on par with what high performing university degree students can get
Will they bring back a good teaching system to universities who seem to spend more on buidkings than on teaching students. Most is online uninspiring lonely learning. This is not supportive of all learning styles or needs. I wonder whst the drop out rates are ? .
'magin if same criteria applied to pollies & jernos? 'magin if teachers got paid properly?
Dat scrimination Tanya
What will the low scoring students do? ABC presenter could be a good fit or run a Union
Well done Labor. That’s exactly what we need to answer our problems as teachers - fewer teachers. Why don’t you ask actual teachers what they need. Put funding into teacher wages to attract the best and brightest.
So short-sighted. If you're artificially setting an ATAR of 80, you'd better be upping wages to match professions also requiring 80.
Low-scoring ATAR students will be barred from being teachers? So who will be teachers then?
The word she used was specifically 'restrict'. The word 'barred' has a totally different meaning altogether. Do better. Stop misrepresenting people and issues. Words matter.
