Naloxone currently is used to save people from opioid overdose, but the protection is is short, lasting less than an hour. The effects of opioids can persist for several hours, which puts the individual at risk of overdose re-emerging as effects of naloxone wear off.

With joint pain often linked to opioid overuse, the goal is to find safer pharmaceutical alternatives. Also, this research can help develop new therapies for treating joint pain, reducing deterioration and even restoring healthy joints.
