Parents, teachers and community members made their frustrations known at a Newport News, Virginia, school board meeting Tuesday night after a 6-year-old student intentionally shot his first grade teacher during class earlier this month.

January 18, 2023, 2:52 PMResidents of Newport News hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Richneck Elementary School first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner at the School Administration Building in Newport News, Va., Jan. 9, 2023.

"She's 6, she's terrified because the person who was advocating for her got hurt," Desiree, who only wanted to be referred to by her first name, told the school board, which was gathering for public comment for the first time since the shooting. There was no timeline given during the two-hour school board meeting for when students at Richneck Elementary would go back to class.

Maybe the Republicans along with the NRA should propose arming all students. So a good 6-year old with a gun can stop a bad 6-year old with a gun. 😬

I don't know why the boys parents aren't cited and maybe more for the shooting! They bought The gun!

Ironic! These parents here appalled at the refusal by admins to descipline students are the same one who raise H*ll if anyone dares to correct their precious angels, demand accountability of their darlings, or suggest that their kids’ every move isn’t perfect. They created this!

Newsflash, the refusal by administration to discipline students that parents and teachers are decrying here is status quo all over the country. Kids know they can get away with anything. Admins & boards are so scared of parents they will not demand decent behavior!

THEY VOTED FOR TRUMP AND THE MOB AND STILL VOTES FOR THESE MOBS! J

It's so sad that this keeps happening. We need to do something to make our schools safer for everyone.

I’m so happy to hear the parents supporting this teacher; so rare these days. Now let’s hold this school district and these child’s parents accountable. The school should have taken prior reports seriously and those parents are responsible for their 6yo.

I’m sure this teacher had requested help with this child throughout the year. The investigation needs to include if her administration did not do enough to protect her.

Remember that in 2024

How it is possible juz think about it a 6 year old , where we are going

ABC WORKING HARD FOR DEMOCRATS TONIGHT

Please stop with the foolish weather scare every night. 50 million in the path. 20 million… it’s PATHETIC

Turn the school into a prison instead of removing the sheer number of guns in Virginia. Solid policy.

Where was Glenn Youngkin? I'm sure he was there, since he's so concerned about kids in schools

What frustration? Go shout to the NRA and republicans

Anger grows in Virginia city where first-grader shot teacherParents and teachers in the Virginia city where a first-grader shot his teacher lambasted school administrators at a school board meeting for what they say is a misguided emphasis on attendance and other statistics over the safety of children and staff. No news here. The six year old was learning civics and that every American has a right to carry a deadly weapon. I was just told from a teacher’s co worker, The school searched his book bag after he bragged about having a gun, but did not search the kid because they didn’t want to violate him. He later shot her.. The child has brought bullets to school in the past.. I believe it stems from the home and these kids bring that dysfunction into the schools
