Parents and teachers in the Virginia city where a first-grader shot his teacher lambasted school administrators at a school board meeting for what they say is a misguided emphasis on attendance and other statistics over the safety of children and staff.

. There was no warning and no struggle before the 6-year-old pointed the gun at his teacher and fired one round, police said.

Newport News police said the 6-year-old’s mother legally purchased the gun but that it was unclear how her son gained access to it.

'Traditional discipline has widened inequities ... Research has found that these discipline disparities can have lifelong consequences for children, such as worsened educational outcomes and higher rates of incarceration.' Oh! Discipline causes inequity! Stop all discipline!

I don’t know why people are blaming the school board. Government agencies aren’t allowed to take guns from anyone. They were just respecting the kid’s secondamendment rights.

Are the parents affiliated with the Republican party? Why the coverup

Mainstreaming is not for all children. It only holds back and endangers the other students.

Yes! Good for the Newport News community - they’re right. If the school system was focused on providing a safe environment for kids to learn, instead of compulsion and test scores, they would be in a better position to claim they did all they could to help the students.

Sure, lets not blame the poor parenting for allowing this kid to take a loaded gun from 'his' home and shoot his teacher. That would be awful. The kid should be removed from this unsafe home and put with responsible parents. Have to be trump supporters.

Despite this lack of support and protection for teachers... 'The bullet pierced Zwerner’s hand and struck her chest. The 25-year-old hustled her students out of the classroom before being rushed to the hospital.' Her priority AFTER BEING SHOT was the safety of her students.

Parents blaming administrators? How about taking a look in the mirror? Those same parents could protect their children today if they just supported sensible gun legislation. I don’t want to hear from them how they can’t protect their child, but school admins must. Hypocrisy 🤮

Wish people would use birth control before having kids they wont parent properly or cant afford to raise

1) Parents are to blame for not only an unsecured firearm, but for raising such a hateful child that would even contemplate violence towards a teacher. 2) Perfect attendance is strongly encouraged because school districts reap federal/state funds based on student days in class.

I send my kids to school to be babysat for free (like I pay taxes, taxes are for suckers who believe in the feeb lies) not to be taught anything. Fire the school board and hire appropriate good Christians who understand what American patriotism is.

How is it still unclear how the kid got the gun? They should know by now

Quit blaming the school board. The kids parents are to blame for this one.

Hey Blake Freeman. I thought of you when I saw this. I know that you love to rip on Hunter Biden. HunterBiden BlakeFreeman Blakefreeman

It’s always about test scores and attendance. Safety, along with mental health, would rank clear at the bottom of what many districts care about.

Exactly 0 teachers are surprised. Admin only cares about looking good on paper. They push PBIS because teachers get tired of lack of admin support, so they stop writing referrals, then admin can say disciple referrals have gone down. Teachers and students are always last

Was anyone upset about the child's PARENT? Since Columbine I have thought parents should be held DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for child's actions. Go to jail for the crime AND whatever 'parent neglect charges' apply. If my child shoots your child with MY GUN, how is that NOT MY fault?

I believe it stems from the home and these kids bring that dysfunction into the schools

I was just told from a teacher’s co worker, The school searched his book bag after he bragged about having a gun, but did not search the kid because they didn’t want to violate him. He later shot her.. The child has brought bullets to school in the past..

No news here. The six year old was learning civics and that every American has a right to carry a deadly weapon.
