JUST IN: Ontario overhauls curriculum for computer, technological education.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the changes will give students experience with new technology, expose them to real-life problem solving and prepare them for the job market. The government says the updated computer studies curriculum will start with a new Grade 10 course in September and will give students the opportunity to apply coding concepts, build hands-on projects, and investigate artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

The technological education curriculum updates are set to start with revised Grade 9 and 10 courses in September 2024. The government says the updates will reflect automation advancements in agriculture, manufacturing, and construction, and the new course material will prepare students for careers as electricians and plumbers and in communications and manufacturing.

Ontario last updated the technological education curriculum in 2009 and the computer science curriculum was last updated in 2008.

You mean like how you destreamed grade 10 classes but there was no new curriculum? Or overhauled the grade 9 curriculum with no time for proper training?

Ontario had one of the best education systems in the world until the privitizing Conservatives got their hands on it. Now...not so much.

Would the computer and the budget for them follow? As usual, no. MoE doesn't care about education, only about himself and his ego. onted onpoli WorstEducationMinisterAward FireLecce

This is good news. Kids need to be taught skills transferable to the real world. Kudos to Lecce.

Time to dust off the Commodore 64s and download Almena Type and Time.🤨🤦‍♂️

My Ss tech is ancient, laggy and doesnt support new apps and software. 🤷‍♀️ Theres no budget for lab consumables so that's out. No shop material or robotics supplies. Is 💰 going to come with new curriculum?

Yeah, did you see the computers they have in schools? Good luck running any of modern programming tools. Technological, what a joke?

Trying to remember any fanfare from news media when the previous Liberal government overhauled curriculum. Not exactly breaking news is it? But news media seem to carry water for Conservative governments any way and every way they can.

What would help more is bringing back an optional 5th year so students can explore things like tech and the trades. For some kids, 4 years is not enough time to figure things out.

Things that are mandatory should be life-related - food & nutrition healthy living. budgeting, understanding legal documents (leases, mortgages, etc.) stronger civics, basic computer skills and critical thinking, etc. Even though I am a tech person, I know it isn't for everyone.

My kids sent their Christmas list in a Google Doc hoping that I wouldn't realize that they received updates when I cross things off. I think they are good despite you 🖕

I wonder if he knows he'll need 'teachers', you know, the word he can't bring himself to say without choking on his boyfriends juices.

Where are the qualified staff?

the guy just keeps “updating curriculum” with no resources to support it, or any professional development. It’s almost as if he doesn’t understand how to implement new curriculum

You can mandate STEAM expectations all you want, but it’s useless without THE RESOURCES, STAFFING OR THE TECHNOLOGY! We do not have the resources to appropriately teach STEAM. $200 per class per year & less than 1-1 tech will not be enough to adequately to teach this curriculum.

Any mention on training for teachers?

Fun fact, most boards can’t even find qualified tech and computer science teachers now. Starting at 50k with a com. Sci degree in teaching and waiting 12 years to hit 6 figures. They aren’t taking the gig. We canceled coding classes at my school b/c no teachers

Cool. Just like curriculum is always updated eventually, with or without Sflecce And since he won’t provide funds for updated TECH, and forget about training and resources for students, this is fairly meaningless

Overhauling and modernizing the curriculum without the funding to train teachers and provide tech in every classroom for student use is pointless. Or, it only benefits students in schools or families that can fund the shortfall.

I wonder which donor company helped out with that?

…and December will now be renamed “Announcementember”

Another useless PR stunt. Of course, no $ for training, PD, support for vulnerable students. Nothing about growing violence in TDSB. Not one more penny. Keep s**tting on public education, private school brat.

Dear Ontario, I am upgrading the curricklum for the childrens computer classes so they can learn to fax their emails just like I do. Premair

Ontario government reaches tentative deal with Ontario Council of Educational WorkersThe Ontario government has reached a tentative deal with school staff represented by the Ontario Council of Educational Workers. we don't need to see his face..... we've seen it enough for a lifetime Yep in which Steve did nothing but gaslight and lie…. This is good news. But Lecce needs to step up with regards to student safety. The woke school boards are prisoners of their own ideologies and are unwilling to improve student safety at the risk of being seen as inequitable. 🙄
