Poll of 1,200 LGBTQ+ students in Irish schools finds most feel unsafe despite anti-bullying policies

One in three LGBT+ students say they skipped school to avoid negative treatment and said bathrooms, PE, sports facilities, locker rooms and lunchrooms are spaces where they are most likely to avoid due to feeling unsafe.

Moninne Griffith, chief executive of BelongTo, said the research highlights the “urgent need” for educators, parents, schools, policymakers, and politicians to listen to students and learn from them. “I’d realised I was gay in about sixth class but had been thinking of it since around 10. I came out to my family and close friends ... the environment I had at primary was very supportive,” says Sean, who opted not to use his real name to protect his identity. At second level, however, there were homophobic remarks in classes, on the corridors or in changing rooms – despite the school’s ethos as a pluralist setting where diversity is embraced.

When he was called “faggot” on the street while walking his dog, Sean took matters into his own hands: he “named and shamed” the person on social media and warned that others would face the same consequences. “I think that caused a bit of fear. It died down then,” he says.

Lies

Close the schools for good then. Parents can teach there own children.

Pretty sure this is untrue. Attention seeking fear momgering, otherwise attendance at school would be an issue.

Enoch is imprisoned to an absolute clown judicial system in an absolute clown country.

No they havnt teachers are afraid to say anything

There's are obliviously transgender people in Ireland, obliviously. But there are those that are looking for something to hang onto and being transgender may offer that as anything goes in that community. But we need really conversation about it.

No they haven't

We all got slagged off in school, it’s a part of growing up, did they have to be Hospitalised after they heard the remarks 🤷🏼

Nonsense. Far more likely to hear anti Catholic remarks in school than anti LGBTQI remarks.

The heartless comments here show just why there is such a high level of mental distress & suicide among young adults who identify as LGBT but understand that all this uncaring hatred surrounds them in society. The absolute heart-breaking brutality is shocking to witness.

Is it a gay thing or transgender nonsense some teachers probably looked at them funny for wearing a dress 😳 . In the 70 when i was a teenager we had obviously gay students .( If ya know you know !) never anything said .why now does this make the news ? Nonsense

Most straight people have gotten derogatory remarks from school staff aswell, this buullshit needs to stop.

Dear friends of the Irish Times, I'd like to propose another perspective to your attention. Please enjoy.

Better import half of Somali to fix this bigotry

bla bla bla....bla bla bla

Hawthorne Effect partly explains. Tho many Gen-Z are so confused they don’t know whether their blown up or stuffed. I do not mock these young people or this young person but this clip illustrates the increasing confusion out there. DetachedReality 😢

All teenagers go through a period of extreme doubt and self-questioning. Adults should acknowledge that all teenagers do this in every part of the World. No adult of 35 is anything like the teenager they once were. Nothing in this world is fixed. Life is a mass of swirling greys.

How did they assess the identification of those teens as LGTBQ+? Why did they even start such a survey? Who financed it? Who are these individuals? Are Christian sponsors even allowed to start surveys on hetero teens on how they feel threatened by LGTBQ+ bullying schemes?

I have curly hair and heard some remarks about it from school staff when I was at school. I got over it.

Bollocks

Most bald men have heard jokes about bald men.

Most teens in the west have been treated like dirt by other teens. Why? Because most teens today in the decadent west are brats, it’s that simple. No one gets a get out of jail free card for it. Go after the overindulgent parents and filthy social media culture.

Is that an official figure from the data and research your paper did on the issue or is it like Donnelys 'oddles of data' 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Most teens have heard horrible remarks about them or people like them. Our teens in the west today are brats, plain and simple. No I’ve gets special status from the teen years.

Secondly, if we want to make surveys about FEELINGS in an UNBIASED manner, why don't they prepare also a survey for Christian straight teens? And ultimately, what about a survey directed to the parents of these teens? Since the legal authority is the parent, not the child?

I would need a papyrus to debunk all the trash written in this pseudo-article. First of all, it is not an assessment of any kind to say 'second-level students who identify as LGTBG+'. Their sexuality is still developing and hence it has no legal value what do they identify with.

This is not surprising unfortunately..the same teachers are pushing gender ideology which is deeply homophobic cottonceiling LGBWithoutTheT

I’m sure they’ll get over it🙄

Quoting: 'The 2022 school climate survey asked second-level students in Ireland who identify as LGTBG+ about their feelings of safety, instances of discrimination, experiences of harassment and availability of school-based supports in the most recent academic year.'

Maybe it is better for young people to be taught that appropriate social boundaries do not allow for 'coming out'? Being bullied is part of adolescence. Need strong headmasters and other admin's and decent parents who talk to each other, not stories in the Irish Times.

Men straight men have heard homophobic remarks in school. Only bogger and howiyeh men continue with these remarks after school. Middle class men grow out of it.

Most gay teens are given social proof and massive amounts of virtue by teachers, schools, media etc. but the article says it all. ' BelongTo, an Irish organisation that supports LGBTQ+ young people.' doubtless an NGO that would have no reason to exist if the reality were accepted

Did school report mention small/fat teens, long/lanky teens, bespectacled teens, braced-teeth teens, freckled teens, red haired teens etc.. Not that any should be bullied. All should treat each other with respect. However is 'h-phobia' the ONLY one to get read from the list?

This must stop!

This is a photo of a young child, not a teenager.

Most people are sick to their stomachs of the inordinate amount of articles on this topic..a minority group get an extraordinary amount of mention in the media….perhaps most of the minority are working in the media?

Lies, Lies and more Lies.

But, many more heterosexual teens have heard heterophobic remarks from school staff. Homo- the same or likened to phobic- irrational fear So kids have heard the same or likened too irrational fear remarks?

Long story short, you are preparing a brainwashing op to justify the Enoch Burke scandal. I see.

Most of Christian kids and adults have heard and read Christian-phobic comments, articles & laws from teachers, wannabe journalists, Rte news and sadly also from the Irish Times. From judges, law makers and country leaders. ....

You can decide to sin and go against your God given sex. In complete freedom. It's freedom of will. Just do not push your will on my children and in public schools. Keep your own religion to your own bedroom.

I will read the article and give you another chance, although I know already your prejudicial mindset and where are you heading to and why. In the meantime, understand that to oppose the idea of convincing kids they can choose their sex is not a form of phobia. It's decency.

After what happened to Chloe Cole who trusted 'professionals' as a young teen, whose breasts were cut off her by a butcher at 15, best advice for a teen struggling with sexual issues is avoid reading the Irish Times and talk to a non-woke independent counsellor with common sense.

Most? All 2 or 3 of them? So what?!

Sticks and stones 🙄

I confided being gay to my school chaplain. He took that opportunity to sexually abuse me for years whilst blackmailing me into silence. Years later, the school denied he even attended the school!
