Image: Shutterstock THREE QUARTERS OF LGBTQ+ students feel unsafe at school, according to new research from advocacy group BeLong To.
One anonymous respondent said: “I think a big part of my depression in life has been since I found out I’m gay when I was 14-15.“At first I hated myself because of it, I used to pray and wish I was ‘normal’ because that’s how students in school treated LGBTQ+ people.” One positive finding in the report was that 99% of respondents said they knew at least one staff member supportive of LGBTQ+ identities.
There is still a long way to go for positive changes in laws and policies that we have seen in Ireland in recent years to translate into change experienced in the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ young people. Griffith added: “This research highlights the urgent need for educators, parents, schools, policymakers, and politicians to listen to LGBTQ+ students and to learn from them. We must prioritise the safety and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ students who are seriously at risk.
NGO spouts lies to justify more taxpayers money.....Ireland ngo complex is costing 6 billion per annum
Even if it's only just 25%, kids shouldn't feel like this in school
Proof please.....who did the research etc...who was asked etc...
Time to toughen up then. They'll find the rest of their life won't be much easier
You have got to be joking me, my children feel intimidated by some of the actions of their school in relation to all the LGBTQ+ activities they are asked to take part in. Like dressing up as colours of the rainbow, making posters etc in art. Stayed home instead on those days.
What rubbish.
And what?
Blame the parents
New research by people who want a certain outcome says… exactly what they want it to say. Go figure
What do they want ?
Horseshit
Always victims
