In the hugely popular but often maligned world of true crime, the conviction this week of former Sydney teacher Chris Dawson for the murder of his wife Lynette was a big win for podcast justice.

A popular podcast about Ms Dawson's disappearance prompted the cold case to be reopenedThe blockbuster genre has left a litany of complaints and complications in its wake, sometimes delaying actual justice, occasionally denying it completely.

Some have claimed the pressure of all that attention helped push prosecutors to lay charges, something they'd been unwilling to do in almost 40 years despite two coronial inquests urging them to do so.Others have been scathing about the role The Teacher's Pet played in almost derailing the carriage of justice.

"These challenges were often based on the proposition that particular witnesses were irrevocably compromised by the influence upon them of the Teacher's Pet podcast, either because they had developed a predisposition against Mr Dawson as a result of listening to it … or because their memories had been corrupted or supplanted by the publicity that it has generated," Justice Harrison said while delivering his five-hour judgement.

"We have a jury system for a reason, because in principle, we believe that a trial in front of a jury of 12 of your peers is superior to a trial in front of a single judge," he said.

The entirety of this case is circumstantial. Will be appealed and is highly contestable. Media hype is ignorant, I’ll-advised & insidious. They have learned nothing. Pell was erroneously convicted, Higgins has no evidence to support claim, now this. Media used to be smarter.

Without the teachers pet podcast Dawson would never have been charged. New evidence was uncovered and it created public pressure on the police to investigate and the DPP to charge. Get out of your ABC ivory tower once in a while.

It's the media that's obsessed with crime, and in the process committing crimes themselves, and calling it freedom of the press

Of course, the media could choose to report it as something other than entertainment. Straight news, perhaps?

True Crime Podcast? Or, Alleged Crime Podcast?

‘Our’ obsession❓’OUR’ ❓It’s just easy money for the lazy, unimaginative media.

Guilty according to justice Harrison? All circumstantial and not without reasonable doubt? The case had no jury? No body? Sightings of Lynette Dawson by supposedly responsible witnesses? Well maybe. Question marks all around Chris Dawson but without a body it makes it difficult.

I'll stop right after the Trump fiasco
