'May 24th there were many systematic failures that made the massacre more convenient for the killer,' one parent said.

Brett Cross, whose nephew Uziyah Garcia, was killed at Robb Elementary School on May 24, speaks with Evadula Orta, whose son, Rojelio Torres, also died on that day, before a Uvalde school board meeting on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022.UVALDE - The Uvalde school board met Monday night to discuss four grievances filed against Superintendent Hal Harrell, at least one of which related to the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.

About 50 people showed up at 6 p.m., many of them dripping wet from the thunderstorm blanketing the area. During public comments, five people called on the board to be more transparent and to hold the superintendent accountable.“We need to remember this is not personal or a vendetta or a attack against Dr. Harrell,” said Diana Olvedo-Karau, a former employee of the school district’s transportation department. “We need to — you need to — be able to separate the personal from the professional.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District board members went into closed session, filing out of the Benson board room. They then called each of the four individuals who filed grievances to an adjoining room to privately speak with them and the superintendent individually.“May 24th there were many systematic failures that made the massacre more convenient for the killer,” Martinez wrote in the complaint, in which he sought Harrell’s termination.

Dianna Carew speaks during a Uvalde school board meeting on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022. She said the community wants the truth regarding the murder of 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School on May 24.In closed session, Martinez gave Harrell a list of all his concerns, which stemmed from the July 17 report issued by a Texas House committee investigating the school shooting and the police response to it.

“He seemed very sincere,” Martinez said after the session, referring to Harrell. “I think he would be dumb to not. I’m not going to put up with that if he didn’t seem sincere.”

Back to school, with panic buttons: The post-Uvalde scrambleMelissa Lee comforted her son and daughter after a student opened fire in their suburban Kansas City high school, wounding an administrator and a police officer stationed there. Then weeks later, she wept for the parents in Uvalde, Texas, who were forced to bury their children after the massacre there in May. She said she was “absolutely” reassured when she learned her district had since purchased one of the panic-alert systems gaining traction nationwide amid a surge in school violence that includes shootings and fights. The technology, featuring wearable panic buttons or mobile phone apps, enables teachers to notify each other and police in the event of an emergency. That’s cool. Stricter gun control would be cooler. Imagine children and parents not having to fear going to school. Not sure a panic button is going to do any good if police don't actually respond to it. Great idea!👍
