The NSW Department of Education is investigating how a radioactive substance ended up in a science storeroom at an eastern suburbs school after a teacher uncovered hazardous materials inside rock and mineral samples.
In a letter to parents, Randwick Girls’ principal Lucy Andre said geological specimens were found in a metal box inside a cupboard, located in a science storeroom at the school. “The radioactive material has been appropriately packaged for transport and safely removed from the school. A clearance certificate has been issued.”But Department of Education Deputy Secretary Murat Dizdar told the estimates hearing he was unsure how the material ended up in the science storeroom, or how long it had been there.
Dizdar said bureaucrats were working with the school’s leadership to ascertain how the rock ended up in the science prep room.

lucy_carroll Those damned brazil nuts. Full of radium.
lucy_carroll Radioactivity was part of the high school science curriculum when I was a student. The school had a small plastic 'puck' with a small amount of a Cesium isotope. Just enough for a Geiger counter to detect it and for experiments on the shielding effects of different materials.
