School support staff will take a strike vote starting Sept. 23, a move their union says will “be a signal” to the Ontario government and boards that workers will not accept concessions at the bargaining table.

And while no job action is planned, the move could put the 55,000 custodians, office staff, educational assistants and early childhood educators in a strike position in October.

The decision to hold a strike vote comes on the heels of the province’s offer of a two per cent raise each year over four years for those earning less than $40,000 and a 1.25 per cent increase for those above that income level. CUPE has been seeking a yearly increase of about 11.7 per cent, putting all workers at the top pay rates and making all overtime payable at double time, as well as guaranteed service and staffing levels in schools.

Lecce said the government offer is “fair, reasonable and affordable for the taxpayer,” while CUPE’s proposal would lead to a $21-billion increase in the education budget, as it would set the standard for all other education unions that are also in bargaining now.Their strike vote will be held between Sept. 23 and Oct. 2. Contract negotiations are scheduled to continue into September.

It's so dishearting to work in this industry when all I would like is a fair raise that at least is close to inflation. Not accepting 1.25% wage increase after enduring 10yrs of less then 1% on average makes me a greedy union employee? That's just sad.

Yup that sounds like it is all about the greater good of the children

Two years of pandemic didn't stop unions to increase the status quo. Wait! didn't certain government functions, businesses, jobs & professions stayed closed or reduced hours, many didn't work or had very reduced duties for 2 years...yet we deserve...

LAZY BEING LAZY.After two years they still want to work feom home. Send them home for good.

So holding kids and parents hostage after the last 2 years of hell? More proof unions are for $$$ not the kids

Legislate them back to work.

This is why you dont print $400B and have inflation go crazy. It gets embedded into people expectations and they demand higher wages to compensate and then you never get out of the spiral. Meanwhile JT is refreshed after his vacay while the country burns under his watch

For the kids ofcourse. 😬🤣

Why can't our government dissolve this greedy union? Is there a law that says the public has to accept it? It's no wonder the private sector is so pissed off with these people.

CUPE doesn’t want a strike they never do. They have to keepthe money flowing in to pay those commies their insane wages

Good. They’re completely justified. This government has been disloyal and disrespectful to the people they cry crocodile tears over. DougFraud

This is what happens when you treat people like garbage.

Two years of NO WORK and now they will strike...lol

Thank you Sflecce 🙄

strike with healthcare simultaneously do it. Enough is enough

I don’t blame them.

So… the government is being given time to come with a viable plan. Let’s see if they do.

Money has never been an incentive to work. Now lack of money (and no government freebies) creates a real incentive to work!

Pay your custodians fordnation

🤡🤡🤡🤡

I’d support and love to see the educators and medical community all on rotating strikes……I love reading the narratives as people turn on the educators this is exactly what Ford and his cronies want to see…bottom line it’s the government’s responsibility if they have to strike!

Right on schedule...

No reason for public sector unions at all. This is an essential taxpayer service.

Of course. Won't strike when off for most of summer. Noooooo.

Classic

I believe totally in education and our educators… but As a parent I’m tired of this shit
