Learners might suffer from growing classroom shortage in the coming years if the government will not allocate sufficient funds to fix the facilities, especially those that were hit by calamities, Education Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III said Friday.

In his presentation during the Senate Committee on Basic Education organizational hearing, Densing tagged the lack of classrooms as the "major challenge" of the Department of Education .

Densing reported that the budgetary requirement for repair of classrooms that were hit by calamities since 2015 is around P40 billion, of which P16 billion are "most immediate." Densing reiterated Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte's earlier statement that DepEd is in a "quicksand" as the worth of damage due to calamities reaches around P5 to P6 billion every year, yet the agency is only allocated P2 billion for its Quick Response Fund annually.

In their discussion with the Department of Budget and Management last week, Densing said they are expecting a funding of P5.9 billion for new school buildings, P1.5 billion for repairs, and around P2 billion for the QRF next year.
