The raises the province is offering education workers in a proposed four-year deal aren't enough to keep up with the cost of living, the union representing public high school teachers said Thursday.

Karen Littlewood, president of the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers' Federation, weighed in on the proposal the government tabled earlier this week in bargaining with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

The proposed deal, which would offer a two per cent raise to education workers making less than $40,000 a year and a 1.25 per cent raise to everyone else, gave a first indication of what the Progressive Conservative government is seeking in deals also being negotiated with the four major teachers' unions.

Offering only a 1.25 per cent increase, after raises were capped at one per cent for several years, is “not respectful for the work that's being done,” she said. “It's the same as health care. It's happening there faster than in education, but we have to look at all those warning signs.”

Welcome to the real world

Welcome to the general public.

These are the psws of the education system. 1 year of college to become an EA. If PSWs made the $$$ that theses people do per hour they would be ecstatic and our health care system would be in the situation it is

This is a Conservative government after all and they don't care about things like health care and education. They care about paving over arable land, building condos, and drilling for oil and gas. That's it.

Truth. It’s shameful what they are paid.

Go get a new job then.

Do you mean to stay in line with the cost of living.

Single parent here!! Under $29,000 per year. Still alive!!

They want this

Poor babies. Join the club

It’s the same with every other industry

Who the hell is keeping ng up with cost of living They only need too

LOL

And no one cares

No increase can keep up with current inflated living costs! The expectation of a 52% increase or whatever it was is absolutely absurd! The Province has to come up with the money somewhere to pay all the increases in all collective bargaining agreements.

Ugh.. so brutally annoying that those of us who work in the education sector but who ARE NOT teachers and do NOT make close to teachers wages are always clumped in as if we do by those in the public that are not working in the education sector. PLEASE learn the difference!!! :)

What a load of crap. Do you think everyone in the private sector is getting a 12% raise? If you want more money, get it from the teachers.

Very few are keeping pace with increases in cost of living. It’s unreasonable to think that a group should keep pace when most workers are not. Teachers make good salaries from decades of generous settlements - among highest in Cdn & have job security for the most part.

Welcome to life for the rest of us…

Sounds like some teachers wed to get a summer job

It’s more then enough…Ontario teachers are the highest paid and the laziest teachers in Canada…when I went to high school teachers taught because they enjoyed it…now the new breed of teachers work for a paycheque Sflecce Don’t budge on your offer. Make teachers essential

Join the crowd you bunch of whining folk

They might want to try being a Registered Nurse. ontarionurses RNAO Lowest paid Essential worker in Ontario.

Get educated. MSM hides any truth that doesn't fit the government narrative. Like this:

This has nothing to do with teachers lol get informed or don’t put your nose where it doesn’t belong.

Don’t like it find a different job!

Boohoo. Everyone has taken a hit.

May 11% is way to much but there has to be some compromises. Maybe an 11% raise over a four year period. Or a 6% raise each year for 4 years. Or bring give them a 11% raise the first year and then 2.5% going forward. Lecce needs to show he is working with them.

Imagine getting paid 15 to 20k more then the average Canadian, getting 3 months off work every year to enjoy the summer, March break, and winter holidays and complaining all the time. They should get the average every other Canadian gets. Which is less then the cost of inflation

Its ALL workers not just teachers! We are all struggling!!

They can always be roofers on the weekends. That seems like a nice easy job for them.

Get a second JOB !

Private sector gets fleeced again.

Cry me a river. They think they can do better elsewhere, quit and find another job.

Teachers are always whining. Time to home school.

They can get in line.

I guess they can live like the rest of us !!!!

That's OK. We can always get a new union.

Greed

Welcome to the rsst of us. Teachers are not special. Everyone wished they could get paid to keep up with living costs, know what everyone else would like? 100% pension thats what.

Just make correspondence I was able complete CIM and CFA

fordnation ‘s mandate is to screw over both nurses & our teachers 😡 He plans on privatizing both! Don’t be fooled Ontario Doug Ford will destroy as many public institutions as possible over the next 4 years ☹️ onpoli OHIP DougFordIsDestroyingOntario DougFordIsLyingToYou

If this is true, Ontario is about to be one uneducated province. Maybe teachers will move to USA too! fordnation ONgov

Some further insight ~

Welcome to the planet.

CUPE is asking for guaranteed 52% increase over 4 years 😂 😂 😂

Oh well... that's what the tax payer can afford... make it work or get a 2nd job like many have. Cope.

For all workers not just educators

Homeschool

Teachers brace for ‘tooth and nail’ fight with province over wages, benefitsOntario’s public high school teachers will need to “fight tooth and nail” in this round of bargaining with the provincial government, says the president of their union. Give them 5%. Done. Let’s get back to school. Education funds should go to parents to allow for private education Why is it the government and the unions turn to the media to air their grievances? Each side is hard done by,and looking out for the best interests of (insert name of 3rd party here). If they put as much energy into negotiating “their” deal it would have been settled.
