When, on a whim, a 17-year-old contacted Carol Burnett, she never expected the comedian to respond—let alone grant her an interview.

A lot of what you did was live. What did you enjoy about filming with lots of takes and no studio audience, and what didn’t you like about it?I was cast as Miss Hannigan. The first day I had a scene where Ann Reinking comes into the orphanage and wants to adopt an orphan and I’m against it. I asked John Huston, the director, “How do you see me playing this role?” and he looked at me and he said, “Just cavort, dear. Cavort.” In other words, I hired you to do what you do.

So, I cavorted. In fact, I cavorted so much that when I sat down I missed the chair and I sat on the floor. He loved that. He said, “Keep that in.” But I prefer having an audience. It tells me when I’m right because they’re never wrong.I was very nervous. I was at UCLA in a course called Musical Comedy Workshop.

So, I got up and I was really nervous but I belted it out and the audience was so enthusiastic. I thought, Oh, my gosh, this is what I want to do with my life. I want to be in musical comedy. You have to really know the material, and realize that everybody watching you wants you to succeed. I remember when I was in New York, there was one audition that I had for the chorus of some show. It narrowed down to this other girl and me. I really thought I had the job, but I didn’t. She got it.

And you know what saved me, Olivia? I stopped for a minute and said, well, wait a minute. It’s her turn. It’s not my turn. My turn will come, but this time this was for her. That kept me from being discouraged. I think it’s the best advice I could give anybody. I was so depressed, but the other person would have felt that way too. Give them that. If you work hard enough, if you have the fire in your belly and you’re ready when that door opens up for the opportunity, you’ll get it.

So, be open to all of your ideas and don’t think you can’t do something because nobody’s ever done it before. Have faith in yourself, but be prepared. Take singing lessons. Take dancing if you can, all of those things. Try out for everything. You’re 17. I didn’t know what I was going to do until I was 19.
