Cheating rates among university students have risen as institutions increasingly relied on online assessments during the pandemic, raising concerns that dishonest undergraduates will next resort to using artificial intelligence for tasks | daniellamariewh

Cheating rates among university students have risen as institutions increasingly relied on online assessments during the COVID pandemic, raising concerns that dishonest undergraduates will next resort to using artificial intelligence to undertake set tasks.

NSW’s two largest universities, UNSW and The University of Sydney, both say they are seeing higher rates of contract cheating since 2019. A UNSW spokeswoman said the pivot to online exams during the pandemic led to a higher level of communication and collusion during exams, with companies directly targeting students through social media platforms.

Professor Phillip Dawson, from Deakin University’s Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning, said while contract cheating was still a major concern, the rise of artificial intelligence was not getting enough attention. “The very little research that’s been done has shown these things can’t produce excellent responses, but they can produce passable ones.”
